A Room That Actually Feels Like You

A Room That Actually Feels Like You

Your bedroom isn't just where you close your eyes at night. It's where you dance like nobody's watching, dissect the latest celebrity gossip with your favourite people, or disappear into a Netflix binge with the door firmly shut and a steaming coffee.

At its best, a bedroom is a haven, a space that looks and feels like you. So don't settle for the same-old, store-bought version everyone else has. Stand out, come alive with the best version of you. To get you started, we've pulled together our favourite bedroom decor ideas to help you build a room you actually want to retreat to.

1. Choose your aesthetic

Before doing a simple on-line shop, decide on the story about your room that you want to tell through your décor. Do you want a maximalist space bursting with colour, pattern and the odd cherished art print, or a calmer, more pared-back retreat where a few considered pieces do all the talking?

There's no wrong answer, only your answer – it’s your story to tell. If you're not sure where you land, browse a few different aesthetics until one feels like home. Our own pattern collections, from playful, characterful prints to soft botanical palettes, are a good place to start if you want inspiration close at hand.

2. Layer your bedding

A bed piled with blankets and cushions instantly makes a room feel cosy and welcoming making you want to instantly flop into it. If you want to take your space from drab to fab, go beyond the standard comforter-and-pillow combo. Soft sheets, a lightweight quilt, a statement duvet cover, and a generous stack of decorative pillows will make your bed seductively call out to you.

Here's the order that gets you the properly layered, magazine-worthy look:

• Sheets: Add your fitted and top sheet, with the top sheet seam-side up so the decorative side shows once it's folded back.

• Quilt: Lay it face down, just like your top sheet, so the pretty underside is revealed when folded.

• Duvet or comforter: Place this over the sheets and quilt, pulling the top back enough to show off the layers underneath.

• Stagger the layers: Peel back the quilt and fitted sheet so each layer steps back a little further than the last, letting every colour and pattern have its moment.

• Add pillows: Finish with sleep pillows at the back, euro and pillow shams for height, and your decorative throw pillows right at the front.

Let your bed become a symphony of dreamland pleasure.

3. Switch up the colour

Whether you're giving a childhood bedroom a grown-up refresh or simply chasing a new mood, colour is where the real transformation happens. It genuinely shapes how a room makes you feel, so this is one decision worth pondering longer on.

For warmth and cosiness, lean into browns and earthy tones. For something calmer and more restorative, cool blues and greens are hard to beat. Our home and textile palette, denim blue, teal and mustard softened with blush and peach, is built for exactly this kind of transformation.

4. Get cosy with throw blankets

Few things pull a room together like a good throw. Drape a small one over the corner of your bed for a pop of colour and personality, or go bigger and layer a generous throw across the whole bed. Choose one from our patterned throws for an instant lift.

5. Paint your furniture

That old wooden dresser that's been in the family for generations? Too sentimental to part with, too bulky to move on. A fresh coat of paint is often all it needs.

Paint it white or a happy, sunny colour to lighten the space, or go black or another neutral to modernise it instantly. There are no rules in your own bedroom, so have a little fun with it. Pick up on any of our complimentary colours accompanying a hero design for inspiration when selecting your paint swatch.

6. Bring in nature

Natural elements bring a sense of calm into any room. Houseplants add colour and life, while an earth-toned palette of woods, greens and blues echoes the outdoors even when you're indoors.

This is where a cottagecore or boho aesthetic really comes into its own, and it's a lovely way to bring warmth and a bit of soul into your space. Our botanical prints, drawn from the same hand-painted florals and leafy patterns you'll find outdoors, are a natural fit here.
